David M. Staples
Dave Staples has served as SpartanNash’s Chief Executive Officer since May 2017. In August 2016, he was appointed President of the company, leading SpartanNash’s overall strategy implementation and execution.
Dave previously served as Chief Operating Officer (2015-17), overseeing SpartanNash’s food distribution, retail and military segments in addition to information technology and real estate. He also held the title of Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for 15 years and Vice President of Finance for a year.
Dave served as Divisional Vice President of Strategic Planning and Reporting (1998-2000) and Divisional Vice President of Accounting Operations (1997-98) for Kmart Corporation.
Dave serves on the board of the SpartanNash Foundation, The Right Place, Topco Associates LLC and the Food Marketing Institute (FMI).
He is a graduate of Michigan State University.
Arif Dar has served as SpartanNash’s Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer since January 2019, responsible for the development and execution of the company’s IT strategy, ensuring alignment with the SpartanNash’s overall business strategy, and providing strategic direction and oversight for the design, development, operation and support of IT systems and programs.
Previously, Arif was the CIO for SC Johnson and Sons, a privately-held global manufacturer of household cleaning supplies and consumer goods. He has also held executive IT positions at Maple Leaf Foods, Bombardier Transportation, General Motors, Tyco International and General Electric.
Arif received his Master of Business Administration degree in MIS and Operations from the University of Western Ontario (Canada); his Master of Science degree in Communication Systems and Radio Engineering from King’s College, University of London (U.K.); and his Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics & Electrical Engineering from the University of Engineering & Technology (Pakistan).
He has his black belt in Six Sigma Quality Training.
Walt Lentz has held the role of Executive Vice President and President, Food Distribution since June 2019, overseeing SpartanNash’s food distribution segment and supply chain responsibilities for the enterprise.
From 2017 to 2019, Walt served as acting Chief Executive Officer and Chief Supply Chain Officer for Peapod LLC, the grocery eCommerce division of Ahold USA. He has more than 30 years of logistics and supply chain experience, including roles as Senior Vice President, Supply Chain for Giant Foods; Senior Vice President, Supply Chain Logistics, Planning and Replenishment for Ahold USA; and executive roles with the Kellogg Company.
Walt holds his Master of Business Administration from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and his Bachelor of Economics from the University of North Carolina.
Kathleen M. Mahoney
Kathy Mahoney was appointed President, MDV in May 2017, overseeing the company’s military division, which is a leading distributor of grocery products to U.S. military commissaries. She has also served as Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer since November 2015.
Prior to joining the company, Kathy served as Managing Partner of the St. Paul office of Larson King, LLP as well as Partner at Oppenheimer Wolff & Donnelly. She previously served as a law clerk to the Minnesota Supreme Court and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York before joining the Antitrust Division of the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office as the Special Assistant Attorney General.
Kathy serves on the Best Lawyers? Advisory Board, the SpartanNash Foundation board of trustees and the Honor and Remember board of directors.
Kathy earned her juris doctorate from Syracuse University College of Law, where she graduated cum laude. She is a member of the American Bar Association and the Minnesota State, Michigan State and Ramsey County Bar Associations.
Lori Raya was named Chief Merchandising and Marketing Officer in February 2019, responsible for the development and execution of the company’s merchandising and marketing strategy, including product assortment, brand positioning, sales planning, pricing, promotion, sourcing, and distribution for SpartanNash’s independent customers and corporate-owned stores.
Lori joined SpartanNash following a 31-year career with Safeway/Albertsons, serving as Division President of Albertsons from 2015-2018. In the role, she led the post-merger transition with Safeway and integration of multiple banner teams within her division for the second-largest grocery store chain in the United States.
She began her career as a store associate, moving up the ranks to store manager, district manager, Vice President of Retail Operations, Group Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and multiple food category senior management positions before serving as the first female divisional president in VON’s 107-year history from 2012-2015.
Lori serves on the board of the Grand Rapids Symphony.
She holds an honorary doctorate in Business from Colorado Mesa University and is a graduate of the USC Marshall School of Business’ Food Industry Executive Program.
Mark Shamber has served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer since September 2017, overseeing finance, mergers and acquisitions, treasury, internal audit, real estate and risk management for the company.
Prior to joining SpartanNash, Mark worked from 2015 to 2017 as an independent consultant. From 2006 to 2015, he served as SVP, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer for United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) — a specialty and organic food distributor. From 2003 to 2006, he served as UNFI’s corporate controller. Earlier in his career, he worked in the audit practice of Ernst & Young LLP and in the finance department of Reebok International Ltd.
Mark is a member of the Financial Executives International, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants.
He is a graduate of Bentley University and is a Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA).
Tom Swanson was named Senior Vice President and General Manger, Corporate Retail in October 2018, leading the corporate retail business unit for all corporate retail banners and Quick Stop fuel and convenience centers. He previously served as Vice President, Retail Merchandising, overseeing the overall strategy for the company’s more than 155 corporate stores in eight states to maximize SpartanNash’s expertise as a retailer and build greater connectivity with distribution customers.
Tom has more than 30 years of executive experience in grocery retail, including six years (2012-2018) as Vice President of SpartanNash’s Retail-West operations.
He is a trustee of the SpartanNash Foundation.
Yvonne Trupiano was named Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources & Corporate Affairs and Communications Officer in March 2018. She provides overall leadership to the company’s human resources and corporate affairs and communications functions, which are responsible for advancing culture, talent and performance. Her primary areas of responsibility include executive and broad-based compensation and benefits, succession planning, talent acquisition and management, learning and development, organizational design and effectiveness, labor relations, HRIS, payroll, diversity and inclusion, and corporate affairs and communications.
Yvonne joined SpartanNash as Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer in October 2016. Previously, she held the position of Vice President, Human Resources at Avis Budget Group, in addition to other HR leadership roles during her tenure there.
Yvonne serves on the Heart of West Michigan United Way Board of Directors and is a trustee of the SpartanNash Foundation.
She holds a Bachelor of Science, Human Resource Development from Oakland University and a Master of Science, Human Resource Administration from Central Michigan University.
